In the exhibition 'HOTEL ITALIA', Nicole Gnesa presents photographs from Malte Wandel's Italy series.

Malte Wandel has been traveling to Northern Italy for years to find hidden places on the shores. He seeks the inconspicuous, even the absurd.

Deserted places seem like an enchanted longing, there must have been an incident that makes these recordings so misterious, they almost seem like crime scenes - black and white photographs and the color photographs in the way of the 1970s as a metaphor of the past underline it. The impossibility of elucidating the enigma makes the work extremely exciting and at the same time permanent.

Thus, even in the drift of the periphery of the metropolitan cities of Turin, Milan, and Genoa, Wandel finds the eternità of a neorealism revived from Italian cinema.

Malte Wandel is a prizewinner of the federal prize for the Wüstenrot Foundation Promotional Awards for Documentary Photography together with the Museum Folkwang, the Vattenfall Prize, and a special prize of the Avanca Film Festival, Portugal. He is also a scholarship holder of VG Bildkunst.

In der Ausstellung 'HOTEL ITALIA' zeigt Nicole Gnesa Fotografien aus der Italien Reihe von Malte Wandel.

Seit Jahren reist Malte Wandel nach Norditalien, um dort Orte im Abseits zu finden. Das Unscheinbare, gar Absurde sucht er.

Die menschenleeren Plätze muten wie verwunschene Sehnsuchtsorte an, an denen – die Schwarzweißfotografie und die Farbfotografie im Charme der 70er Jahre als Metapher der Vergangenheit unterstreichen es - ein Vorkommnis stattgefunden haben muss, das diese Aufnahmen so rätselhaft macht, beinahe erscheinen sie wie Tatorte. Die Unmöglichkeit der Aufklärung des Rätsels macht die Arbeiten intensiv spannend und gleichzeitig bleibend.

So findet Wandel selbst in der Tristesse der Peripherie der Großstädte Turin, Mailand und Genua die eternità eines wiederbelebten, dem italienischen Kino entlehnten Neorealismus.

Malte Wandel ist Preisträger des Föderpreises für Dokumentarfotografie der Wüstenrot Stiftung zusammen mit dem Museum Folkwang, des Vattenfallpreises sowie eines Spezialpreises des Avanca Filmfestivals, Portugal. Zudem ist er Stipendiat der VG Bildkunst.
