JESSICA BUHLMANN: GEOMANCY

With 'GEOMANCY', Nicole Gnesa presents the second solo show of new works by Berlin artist Jessica Buhlmann (*1977). 

In her installation based solo exhibition Jessica Buhlmann shows objects in Munich for the first time. 

Since Alexander Calder, the mobile has lost none of its attraction. Just like the American icon, Buhlmann uses geometric forms in her work  Larkspur  (2019 glass, wood, string, 180 x 350 x 160 cm), which infiltrate the space as a hanging sculpture without completely occupying it. The figures, in Buhlmann's case extended by natural elements of untreated branches, stand enigmatically in space, delimit and open up, and receive life out of the form or constellation of the individual abstract figures connected by strings and their moves related to each other.

Next to  Larkspur  some new paintings will be on display. Just as with the mobile, the paintings are created from lines and geometric shapes, which overlap in layers together with organic forms. Paint mixed from oil and water is poured onto the canvas, the pigments are fixed by strings onto lines resembling partitions and notches. When dried, repetitions from nature appear, one feels reminded of earth, sand, micro- and macro-organisms or even of geoglyphs, they appear like satellite images of a distant world.

Within the relief  Endosymbiosis  (2018, painted wood, 75 x 95.5 x 2 cm), black and white structures overlap around a blue cell nucleus, which, as the title already suggests, cannot be without each other.

Due to the parallels in form and content, the works in the exhibition GEOMANCY communicate directly with each other and can thus be understood as an installation.

GEOMANCY originally refers to a type of fortune-telling by means of markings, lines and coordinates in the landscape. Similar to Feng Shui, the contemporary interpretation entails the channeling of spatial energy flows through artistic interaction.

Buhlmann, who studied musicology and composition before switching to art at the UDK, allows her new works to emerge unplanned in the process. The constructive form is accompanied by an apparent randomness, a rhythmic impulse, a communication with the subconscious. With this artistic approach, Jessica Buhlmann concretizes energy spaces and integrates them into her work.

Mit 'GEOMANCY' präsentiert Nicole Gnesa bereits die zweite Einzelausstellung mit neuen Arbeiten der Berliner Künstlerin Jessica Buhlmann (*1977).

In ihrer installativen Einzelausstellung zeigt Jessica Buhlmann ihrem Münchner Publikum zum ersten Mal Objekte.
Das Mobile hat seit Alexander Calder nichts an seiner Spannung eingebüßt. Ebenso wie die Amerikanische Ikone verwendet Buhlmann in der Arbeit Larkspur (2019 Glas, Holz, Schnur, 180 x 350 x 160 cm) geometrische Formen, die den Raum als hängende Skulptur infiltrieren, ohne ihn gänzlich einzunehmen. Die Figuren, bei Buhlmann erweitert um Naturausschnitte aus unbehandelten Ästen, stehen enigmatisch im Raum, grenzen ab und öffnen sich, leben aus der Form bzw. der Konstellation der einzelnen an Bindfäden zusammenhängenden abstrakten Figuren und ihrer Bewegung zueinander.

Neben Larkspur werden neue Malereien zu sehen sein. Ebenso wie beim Mobile sind die Bilder aus Linien und geometrischen Formen entstanden, die sich in Schichten zusammen mit organischen Formen überlagern. Aus ÷l und Wasser gemischte Farbe wird auf die Leinwand geschüttet, die Pigmente werden mittels Schnüre auf Linien wie Abtrennungen und Kerbungen fixiert. Es ergeben sich im getrockneten Zustand Wiederholungen aus der Natur, man fühlt sich erinnert an Erde, Sand, Mikro- und Makroorganismen oder gar Geoglyphen, sie erscheinen wie Satellitenbilder einer fernen Welt.
Wiederum innerhalb des Wandreliefs Endosymbiosis (2018, bemaltes Holz, 75 x 95.5 x 2 cm) aus Holz überlagern sich um einen blauen Zellkern schwarze und weifle Strukturen, die, wie der Titel bereits verrät, nicht ohne einander sein können.
Aufgrund der formalen und inhaltlichen Parallelen kommunizieren die Werke der Ausstellung GEOMANCY direkt miteinander und sind so als Installation zu verstehen.

GEOMANCY, deutsch Geomantie oder Geomantik, bezeichnet ursprünglich eine Art des Wahrsagens mittels Markierungen, Linien und Koordinaten in der Landschaft. Die zeitgenössische Auslegung identifiziert ähnlich wie bei Feng Shui Bereiche, die mit Hilfe von künstlerischer Interaktion zu Energieräumen werden.
Buhlmann, die vor ihrem Kunststudium an der UDK Musikwissenschaften und Kompositionslehre studierte, lässt ihre neuen Werke ungeplant im Prozess entstehen. Die konstruktive Form wird von einer scheinbaren Zufälligkeit begleitet, einem rhythmischen Impuls, einer Kommunikation mit dem Unterbewusstsein. So konkretisiert Jessica Buhlmann mit dieser künstlerischen Herangehensweise Energieräume und bindet diese in ihr Werk ein.
